The war in the Middle East has entered a new phase, overturning regional and international balances and dragging the entire area into the most dangerous conflict since the beginning of the 21st century. Over the weekend, the United States and Israel launched a large-scale joint military operation against Iran, triggering shock, anger, and diplomatic reactions worldwide. This crisis is no longer a mere escalation: it is an open conflict with potentially global consequences. The offensive began on the morning of February 28, 2026, when hundreds of U.S. and Israeli missiles, guided bombs, and drones struck military targets, nuclear sites, and Iranian defense infrastructure across several provinces, including Tehran, Isfahan, and Natanz. The operation, named Operation Epic Fury and Roar of the Lion, was justified as a preemptive response to perceived threats from Tehran’s military apparatus and the advancement of Iran’s nuclear program.

Confirmation of Ali Khamenei’s Death and Leadership Change in Tehran

In the early hours of Sunday, Iran’s state media agency confirmed that the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had died following attacks on his fortified residence and command centers. His death was also confirmed by members of the U.S. and Israeli administrations. Alongside Khamenei, numerous advisers and senior military officers were killed. The leader’s death marks a radical turning point: the country has entered an unprecedented phase of internal uncertainty, with a 40-day national mourning period and the temporary transfer of certain command functions to the president and other institutional leaders.

Iran’s Massive Response

Iran’s reaction was swift and large-scale. On Sunday morning, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched multiple waves of ballistic missiles and drones against U.S. military bases in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates. Air defense systems intercepted many incoming weapons, though not without causing civilian damage and casualties. Explosions were reported in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, striking infrastructure and civilians; Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jordan also faced attacks, with damage to key infrastructure and persistent air raid alarms. In the first days of the conflict, more than 200 people have been reported dead in Iran and over 700 injured, both civilians and military personnel, while Iran has acknowledged numerous strikes against American and Israeli targets.

A Crisis Shaking the World

The conflict has generated immediate reactions worldwide. The United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting, with Secretary-General António Guterres warning of the risk of uncontrollable escalation. China condemned the attacks, calling for an immediate ceasefire and a return to diplomatic dialogue. Russia urged de-escalation and negotiated solutions. France, Germany, and the United Kingdom condemned the Iranian strikes against Gulf countries, promoting multilateral diplomacy.

Regional and Global Repercussions

The crisis has led to flight cancellations, airport closures, and the rerouting of critical air traffic corridors. The Strait of Hormuz has become a focal point of military tensions and temporary blockades, resulting in rising energy prices on international markets.

A New Order of Crisis

What only days ago was a relatively contained confrontation has transformed into an open multilateral clash, with lasting political, military, and economic consequences. Khamenei’s death alters Iran’s internal balances and opens uncertain scenarios regarding future leadership. Each subsequent move now risks pushing the Middle East—and the entire world—onto a new and dangerous terrain of confrontation.
