The Mafia fears administrative controls that hinder money laundering and seeks to intimidate in order to maintain an appearance of legality

Abstract: A serious incident struck the Local Police of Saviano on the night of January 10, 2026, when a service vehicle of the Saviano Local Police was completely destroyed by an arson attack carried out by unknown individuals directly in front of the Corps’ headquarters. An act of extreme gravity that raised concern but also prompted a strong institutional and civic response, going beyond material damage and calling into question the relationship between institutions, territory, and legality. Set within a complex context such as the so-called “Land of Fires” (Terra dei Fuochi), the event takes on significant symbolic value, directly targeting the institutional presence and the public function exercised daily by the Local Police.

A serious act in a complex territory
Saviano is a municipality of approximately 18,000 inhabitants, located within a delicate territorial context such as the so-called “Land of Fires” (Terra dei Fuochi). The Chief recalls that, upon her arrival about three years ago, her first impression was that of a largely quiet community, though not always accustomed to a constant and systematic territorial control by the Local Police.
It was precisely from this awareness that a profound reorganization of the service began, carried out despite a reduced workforce, with the aim of ensuring daily presence, operational continuity, and a genuine territorial presence.
Everyday legality and silent resistance
On the night of January 10, 2026, a service vehicle of the Saviano Local Police was completely destroyed by an arson attack carried out by unknown individuals in front of the Corps’ headquarters. A serious incident that goes far beyond material damage and directly questions the relationship between institutions, territory, and legality.
The statements of the Chief of the Saviano Local Police, Giuseppina Starace, offer the opportunity for a broader reflection on the meaning of this act and on the role of the Local Police in complex territorial contexts.
Everyday legality and silent resistance
The strengthening of control has inevitably led to an increase in sanctioning activity, but it has also produced an equally evident outcome: the growing trust and gratitude of the majority of honest citizens, who represent the largest and most silent part of the community.
As the Chief emphasizes, the role of the Local Police in medium-sized and small contexts is not one of spectacular action, but rather the more complex and less visible role of community policing: listening, prevention, and direct relationship with citizens. A form of work which, precisely because of its normality and continuity, may encounter resistance from those accustomed to operating at the margins of the rules, mistaking the absence of control for presumed legitimacy.
This is a courageous activity, requiring professionalism and competence, capable of being determined when necessary, while never losing sight of respect for individuals and the authority of institutions.
No warning signs prior to the attack
The Chief firmly clarifies that there had been no warning signs suggesting an act of such gravity. Beyond the physiological disputes that may occasionally arise during routine control and enforcement activities, nothing indicated such an extreme and deliberate action.
The service vehicle, she specifies, was completely destroyed by the flames, but the act did not undermine the determination of the Corps.
“We will not take a step back. We will continue to serve the community”
The message that emerges is clear and unequivocal: the Saviano Local Police will not take a step back.
“I and my officers,” states the Chief, “will continue to carry out our work every day with the same humility and sense of duty that have always distinguished our profession, fully aware of our abilities and of our professionalism in the service of the community.”
The true gratification, she reiterates, comes from the citizens: from those who express gratitude for the constant presence in the territory, from those who see officers every morning in front of schools, helping children cross safely. It is to them that the Corps’ daily commitment is directed.
Solidarity from citizens and the Italian Local Police Union
In closing, the Chief expressed her heartfelt thanks to the UPLI – Italian Local Police Union (ETS) and to all its members for the closeness and solidarity shown in the hours following the attack. A strong signal of how the Local Police network is united and supportive, especially in the most difficult moments.
A serious episode, therefore, that draws attention to the value of the institutional presence, to the centrality of the Local Police in local territories, and to the need to support those who operate every day—often silently—to ensure legality, security, and social cohesion.
Concluding remarks
The arson attack on the Saviano Local Police service vehicle is not merely a news event. It is a signal that highlights the centrality of the public function, the value of everyday legality, and the often silent yet essential role of the Local Police in the democratic stability of territories.
Defending those who safeguard the territory means defending the normality of rules, citizens’ trust, and the very possibility of civil coexistence based on mutual respect. In this sense, the most effective response is not exceptionality, but institutional continuity.
