«OCTOBER 7, 2023 WILL ALWAYS REMAIN IN OUR CONSCIENCES AS A SHAMEFUL PAGE OF HISTORY» – Francesco Mancini

Italian president Mattarella: “What is happening in Gaza, and the different emotions it evokes, must not merge into that ignoble sentiment of antisemitism.”

Abstract: Italian president speach express the objective synthesis of the tragedy of October 7, 2023 — the day that changed the Middle East, the worst pogrom against the Jews since the Second World War, and a tragedy also for the Palestinians, who have suffered a Nakba even worse than that of 1948.

A DATE THAT MARKED HISTORY

October 7th, 2023, will remain an indelible date in collective memory, as italian President Sergio Mattarella stated today on its second anniversary.

At dawn on that Saturday, Hamas militants — the Islamist group that has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007 — launched a large-scale attack against Israel, infiltrating kibbutzim and southern cities, opening fire on civilians, soldiers, and attendees at a music festival near Re’im.

The offensive, carried out by land, air, and sea, was accompanied by thousands of rockets fired from Gaza, catching Israeli intelligence and the army completely off guard.

THE DEATH TOLL

According to Israeli and international sources, the attack caused over 1,200 deaths, mostly civilians, and more than 250 hostages were captured and taken to Gaza.

Images of devastated villages, mutilated bodies, and families fleeing in panic provoked shock and condemnation around the world.

Among the victims were entire families, children, the elderly, and dozens of young people attending the “Supernova” music festival.

THE ISRAELI RESPONSE

Within hours, Israel declared a state of war and launched a vast military campaign against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

The operation — initially named “Iron Swords” — involved massive air bombardments, followed by a ground invasion.

The declared objective of the Israeli government, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, was to “destroy Hamas” and bring back the hostages.

HUMANITARIAN CONSEQUENCES

The conflict that erupted after October 7 triggered an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

According to United Nations and independent NGO data, Israeli bombings and fighting have caused tens of thousands of Palestinian deaths, a high proportion of them civilians, and destroyed essential infrastructure — hospitals, schools, homes, and water systems.

The population of Gaza — over two million people — has become increasingly isolated, with limited access to electricity, drinking water, and medical supplies.

SHOCK AND INTERNATIONAL REACTIONS

The Hamas attack was strongly condemned by much of the international community, including the United States, the European Union, and moderate Arab countries, which described it as “a terrorist act of unprecedented brutality.”

At the same time, the intensity of Israel’s response has raised serious concern among many governments and humanitarian organizations, which have called for respect for international law and the protection of civilians.

THE POLITICAL AND MORAL DILEMMA

October 7 marked not only the beginning of a new phase in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but also a political and psychological breaking point.

For Israel, the massacre reopened deep wounds and raised questions about intelligence failures and national security.

For Palestinians, the ensuing war has meant the devastation of the Gaza Strip and a further distancing from any political solution.

AN UNCERTAIN FUTURE

A year later, the region remains trapped in a fragile and volatile balance.

The wounds of October 7 are still open: hostages remain in captivity, families are shattered, cities lie in ruins.

Diplomatic repercussions — from strained U.S.–Israeli relations to tensions with Iran and Hezbollah — continue to reshape the geopolitics of the Middle East.

A UNIVERSAL WOUND

Beyond sides and identities, the massacre of October 7 reminded the world of the fragility of peace and the brutality of terrorism.

The images of that day — defenseless civilians, mothers shielding their children, rescuers among the rubble — remain a universal warning against hatred and dehumanization.
