THE NEW METRO LINE C REACHES THE COLOSSEUM: HISTORY, DESIGN, AND ITS SIGNIFICANCE FOR ROME, Francesco Mancini

Modern mobility and millennia-old archaeology meet in the heart of the Capital

Francesco Mancini

Abstract: Rome’s Metro Line C reached the Colosseum with the opening, on December 16, 2025, of the new Colosseo–Fori Imperiali and Porta Metronia stations, marking a turning point for urban mobility and the enhancement of historical heritage. The new section connects San Giovanni to the historic center, improving links with Line B and reducing pressure on city traffic. The stations were designed as “museum stations,” integrating the numerous archaeological finds uncovered during excavations and transforming public transport into a cultural experience. The construction of the project required advanced technical solutions to reconcile modern infrastructure with archaeological preservation.

After years of waiting and complex construction works, Rome’s Metro Line C has finally extended its route to the Colosseum, officially inaugurating the Colosseo–Fori Imperiali and Porta Metronia stations on December 16, 2025. This event represents a turning point for urban mobility and the cultural enhancement of the city.

A new section in the heart of the city

The new section connects San Giovanni to Colosseo–Fori Imperiali, with the intermediate stop at Porta Metronia.

With the activation of this segment, Line C reaches approximately 24 stations over more than 20 km of track, also integrating with Line B at the Colosseum station, which thus becomes a major interchange hub.

This connection is set to improve the efficiency of public transport especially for those traveling from the south-eastern outskirts toward the historic center, offering an alternative to the existing Lines A and B and easing urban traffic congestion.

“Museum stations”: mobility and archaeological heritage

The new stations are not merely transport infrastructure: they were designed as true “museum stations” that tell the underground history of Rome. During the excavations, thousands of archaeological finds emerged and are now displayed along passenger routes.

  • Colosseo–Fori Imperiali: a spectacular multi-level station beneath Via dei Fori Imperiali, featuring artifacts ranging from ancient wells to everyday objects from ancient Rome.

  • Porta Metronia: built next to the Aurelian Walls, it preserves remains of a 2nd-century AD Roman barracks and other extraordinary discoveries.

This integration of public transport and cultural heritage transforms the daily commute into an experience of historical discovery, making accessible finds that would otherwise remain largely hidden.

Construction challenges and complexities

Building a metro line beneath Rome’s historic center was far from simple. Works, which began over a decade ago, were slowed by complex geological conditions, continuous archaeological discoveries, and strict heritage-protection constraints.

Innovative techniques—such as the “archaeological top-down” construction method, which proceeds from the surface downward while ensuring structural stability and allowing archaeological investigations during excavation—were adopted to reconcile modern use with historical preservation.

What changes for the city and its citizens

The opening of the new stations brings tangible benefits:

  • reduced travel times to the city center;

  • improved interchanges with other metro lines;

  • easier access to major monumental areas such as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum;

  • increased tourist appeal, as the stations themselves become spaces for narrating the past.

Moreover, the integration of infrastructure and culture can help people perceive public transport not only as a functional means of travel, but also as an opportunity for discovery and learning.

Future prospects for Line C

Line C does not stop here: planning is underway to continue toward Piazza Venezia, the Vatican, and other strategic areas of the city, with new extensions and additional stations expected in the coming years. This long-term project aims to complete a more extensive and functional metro network for residents and visitors alike.

However, the opening of the Piazza Venezia station on Line C is not expected to be operational before 2032 in the most optimistic scenario, with some sources indicating 2033 as a more likely date for completion and opening. As a result, further expansions toward the Vatican will most likely take place in the second half of the century.

The arrival of the new Metro Line C at the Colosseum is a historic event for Rome: it brings together modern urban mobility, archaeological preservation, and cultural enhancement. After years of difficulties and delays due to the complexity of working in the heart of the city, the Capital can finally boast a metro system that not only moves people, but also tells its millennia-old history.
